painting class was great today! we did a critique of the stuff we did for the past week:
we got out early, so i finished stretching my canvas, all i need to do is gesso the whole thing. it feels great to make your own canvas! makes you appreciate more the work that is not there yet knowing you made the canvas with your own chubby fingers. and it is bigger than i thought it would be, 54x54 inches does not sound big but it is after finishing it and standing next to it. then i sneaked to the studio next door where the intermediate painting students are working. dang, they have good stuff! these people work with oil, and they are really good. i dunno the name of the guy who made this. he doesn't show up in class too much. he just pops in when they have to turn in something. pretty neat huh?
this one is by eric. he likes shock value in his works. this is actually one of the subdued ones he made:
this one is by nicole. she's a good painter, too. she is into painting the female form. once, she did hermaphrodite painting, and it was pretty good. here's another work she made, and it's huge! note the stepladder on the left:
this is another good one. i forgot her name, though, my bad, considering she helped me in stretching my canvas! anyway, this piece looks simple, but the mere smoothness of her work and the energy it has, it kinda pulls you in into this vortex. she's not done with it, actually, she has another painting about the same size (48x48) which she'll cut through! so it would be a painting on top of a painting. pretty neat concept, i hope it materializes well:

it is kinda sad

when i was born, i think the Pope was only in his second year of reign. it was a lengthy service - 26 years. i was reading this article over at cnn saying that only two other popes served longer than he did, saint peter and pius ix.
i feel sad mainly because i grew up with him. i remember studying about his life in my religion classes as early as the first grade. he was a hiker, a soccer player, a very sportsy guy in his younger days. well, his young days were pretty much cut off when he lost his mom when he was nine and his brother when he was twelve. who would have thunk he would turn to holy orders when he was 26.
he canonized lots of saints. i'm guessing it's in the hundreds. he canonized two canossian sisters: founder saint magdalene of canossa and african slave saint josephine bakhita. he canonized philippines' first saint in'87. the same with padre pio. all three in my lifetime. and by golly, did he travel! and he was shot early in his papacy. he fought against communism. he was a very conservative pope. he loved the virgin mary. he loved the youth. he spoke eight languages. he was a remarkable man.
i wonder how things are gonna work out. this is so dan brown. if you've read both angels and demons and the da vinci code, you'd know what i'm talking about. also reminded me of that movie eurotrip.
eternal rest, grant on to him, oh Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him. amen. picture from CNN.com
